Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Terminated for false reasons with six days to vacate

My husband and I are an apartment manager/maintenance team. Two months ago a new management Co. took over. Two weeks later my baby was born. After 3 weeks off (I still went into the office daily to help the assistant) and 3 weeks at half time, I returned to work only to be fired a week later. We were also given only six days to vacate the apartment that was part of our salary. Can they do this? We are fired as a result of false complaints from a few discontent tenants. After one complaint, we were asked what happened and reprimanded over the phone. They said we had been counseled twice and that our behaviour showed we were unwilling to comply with company policy. The previous company was very satisfied with our performance and we made every effort to comply with the new company's policies. (we were not aware that we were failing in any way) We have never even been reprimanded by an employer before this and now we are jobless and homeless in one day. Please, any advice would be helpful.

Thank You

Re: Terminated for false reasons with six days to vacate

They have to give you at least a 30-day notice to move. If you don't within 30 days, they'll have to go to court to force you out of your apartment. Unfortunately, even apartment managers are at-will employees. You can be fired for no reason, or any reason except unlawful reasons. If they're bad-mouthing you to others about things that didn't happen, they might be committing slander. You might also think about whether they're discriminating against you -- either in housing or work (or both) -- because of your family status, i.e. new kid. Good luck!
