Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Termination while on Medical Leave of Absence

Can a person on Medical Leave from their job for cancer treatment (in California) be terminated? If so, under what circumstances. My wife received a letter saying she will be terminated from her job as a nurse within a week (after about 5-6 months off work for cancer care). Is this allowable under the laws of California, or the laws of the Federal Government? Thank you.

Once they use up any sick days and vacation they have and any time allowed them under the Family Leave Act (12 weeks I think) they can be terminated.
