Legal Question in Employment Law in California

training cost reimbursement for employer

I recently joined a company, which offered me training in a software at a cost of $20k. But from the past couple of months the company is not able to place me on a project and I am loosing valuable experience and time. The company is paying me full salary at the same time. When I was sent for the training, I received a email that I may have to reimburse the cost of trainig in case I leave the company in less than 2 years. I did not sign any contracts to this effect. The questions are:

Will I have to reimburse the training cost if I quit the present job and join some other company 1) in the same software I was trained on ?

2) in a differnt field in which I have an degree in and not use the training I was given ?

3) I did not sign any contracts... will this help in case of legal action ?

Please let me know.

Re: training cost

No, unless you agreed before joining to pay for the training in case you left, they cannot chrge you for that.
