Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Unlawful Determination

On Feb 16th of 2000 I was fired, due to the murder of my brother that had happened at my resident, something I had no control over. I've been working there for 10yrs. When this all took place, I had asked my boss if he was going to fire me, his answer was ''why? are you worried''? I had begged him not to let me go, that my job is my back bone in my life. Well his answer was, ''no I'm not going to fire you don't worry.. On feb 16th he comes up to me and hands me a check and tells me we have to let you go.

I was shocked and hurt at the fact he straight up lied to me. I don't think he had grounds to fire me, for something I had no control over. I am not responsible for other peoples actions. I lost everything within 3 days after that, my job, brother, and last but not least my house. In my opinion, the reason he fired me was because of the publicity, in our small town. The town that I grew up in all my life. I need to know if I have a case of Unlawful Determination. I'm not sure if it is even worth it. Thank you for time. What is the statue of limitations
