Verbal contract for hire broken without cause
My daughter,Susan, was verally hired to be a 3rd grade teacher Wednesday. She was told she will have to attend 3 day training seminar the following Monday with 12+ other teachers from this same school. She did this per their agreement. Empl. contracts are usually offered for signing later before school starts in late Aug. Seminar expenses are to be reimbursed along with a per diam pay for the 3 days. Seminar went smoothly. Within 2 days of return, school principal called Susan to UNHIRED her with a cryptic message ''something you said during the interview told me you would not be a good fit here''....upon request for clarification on this, Susan was told ''think about it, you will figure it out''. That's it! No other explanation was offered and no reason for hiring her and having her attend the training was given. There is only one school in this district. Principal's husband is the Superintendent.
This happened last week all the other schools have already hired their Fall teaching staff by now. Susan is a credentialed teacher and the Teacher's Assoc. rep has yet to return our call. Is this unhiring without cause legal? What can we do about this?

If she believes that the refusal to complete the hiring process was based upon her status as a union representative (if the teachers assoc is a recognized union), she may have a claim. She should seek out an attorney experianced in public employee labor relations matters.
