Legal Question in Employment Law in California

verbal contracts

upon hire owner of company vebally agreed that after one year of employment I was entitled to one week paid vacation. I had submitted request, planned and paid for accured vacation, then was laid off due to lack of work. Upon lay-off employer failed to pay for vacation time accured, and is now claiming that they don't provide paid vacation until employeed for two years with company. Employer also discused this vacation with my spouse several times during employment. In this situation, is a verbal contract binding by law as nothing was in writing. If so I need labor codes to back this up for court.
