As an at-will employee (without a written contract for a specified time) your employer can fire you at any time for any lawful reason, including that they wanted to replace you with someone else, etc. However, upon being fired or laid off (a lay off is when there is not enough work for you), your employer has a legal duty to pay your final paycheck "immediately" upon termination. Because you were asked to pick up your check "next week," your employer will owe you one day's pay for each day you have to wait - up to 30 days pay as a waiting time penalty and the law states that the employer "shall" pay your attorney for collecting unpaid wages. Call an employment law attorney to discuss. Many of us offer a free initial consultation. In the future, it is easier to read and understand if you use small sentences instead of run-on paragraphs. Thanks
