Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Video Cameras in the workplace

Thank you for taking the time to read and reply!

Our company has had video cameras installed in our workplace recently. The employees were not informed that they were going to be installed (although it had been rumored for a couple of years).

What is the employer obligated (if at all) to tell/discuss with the employees? What are the employees rights regarding video cameras? Thank you for your consideration and timely response. We are in Los Angeles County if that has any effect on the law.

Re: Video Cameras in the workplace

The company should inform the workers of the video cameras in the workplace. Of course, they should not be in private areas like rest rooms. There is little expectation of privacy these days in the workplace, unfortunately. Employers are entitled to snoop on the computer you use if it's company equipment. It seems, though, that your employer is suspicious of the workers, and it might not be the best place to work under those circumstances.
