Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Wage Reduction

Recently my employer gave me a performance appraisal that reflected a failure to meet sales expectations. Thus my wages were reduced from $22/hr to $18/hr. The standards and expectations were not known to me and are in fact impossible to achieve. I have good reviews in all other aspects of my job and have high client satisfaction, but because I did not meet the standard for sales, my salary was reduced.

Is this legal? Can my employer set standards without informing me? Can an employer reduce my wages without advance notification or protocol?

Thank you for your time.

Re: Wage Reduction

Absent a contract to the contrary, an employer may prospectively lower your wage; and if you continue to work under the lower wage, you cannot later sue for the difference. An employer cannot, however, retroactively lower your wage.
