Legal Question in Employment Law in California

At will Employment

I realize that a person in CA can quit or be fired without notice. However, if an employee quits, can an employer fire him for quitting? In other words the employee gives notice and the employer fires him then and there. If they can does the employer have to pay the employee for that 2 week notice? Thank You.

No, that's why you're at will. They can fire you at any time, so long as it's not illegal. No severance, either. But they have a certain time frame by which to give you your final pay.

I would only add to Mr. Cohen's response by saying that some companies require that employees give two weeks notice. If this requirement takes the form of a contract, the employee may be entitled to the balance, by contract.
