Legal Question in Employment Law in California

I work in California. My regular day off is Saturday. My employer okayed me to take Easter Sunday off as well and work the early shift on friday because I was going out of town camping. On friday, I called my employer manager and called off. At no time was I informed that there would be a mandatory meeting when I talked to him that morning. There was no signs posted prior to my shift ending on thursday. Saturday morning I get a text message from a coworker saying that my boss said if I was not there at the "mandatory meeting" in 5 minutes I would be suspended for one month time. This was the first I heard of this meeting. Since I was out of town I could not make it. Now I am suspended for one months time. The manager could have told me about the meeting the day I called off. This seems unfair.

Unfair, but not illegal. I would start looking for a new job.
