Legal Question in Employment Law in California

I work at a company that has just been bought out. The new company is asking for me to provide a copy of a tax return to prove that I am married. Is this legal?

Tax returns are confidential and can not even be obtained via a subpoena. If they want a proof of your being married so that the are not paying medical benefits to people not entitled to it, etc., the are not being unreasonabale to request some proof. Do you have the marriage license [should be able to get a certified copy for a fee from the County Recorder's Office] or other proof? Remember, if you are an "at will" [no contract of employment] employee as most people in California are, they can fire you without having any reason.Ask them if the marriage license will do as your wife refused to give up the tax privilege.
