Legal Question in Employment Law in California
I work at a gym that opens at 6:30 am in california. There is only one person working per shift, so if you are late, no one is there to open the gym. The owner wants to make it a rule that employees must call him from our house phone as we are leaving to get to work. He wants to make this a clock in system to make sure that we are going to be on time to work. Is this legal?

It doesn't appear that that would violate any laws. But, what if you get stuck in traffic? How will the phone calls assure that the gym will open precisely at 6:30? It seems that, if he can't trust an employee, he should hire one who is more reliable.
