Legal Question in Employment Law in California
I work for a very large company that sells many products. In my position I work with a number of different products that we offer. My company is selling a part of their business that manufactures a particular product line. That particular product line is one of the many that I work with. As part of the sale of that product line, my current company must send a number of employees to the buyer with knowledge of the product so that they are able to support the product.
I have been chosen from a pool employees that have experience with the product to go to the buying company and will be made an offer to join the buying company. If I decline the offer someone else from the pool of employees will be chosen and I will be terminated from my current position. Can they terminate my employment for that reason?

Unless for some reason you are not an at will employee they can terminate you for any reason that does not constitute prohibited discrimination, such as for race or gender. They most certainly can fire you because they no longer need you and you refuse to go to the company that now does need you.
