Legal Question in Employment Law in California

At work people are required to punch and work for their required 8 hour days. However, only certain departments MUST punch in from certain computers at work in order to track the I.P. address and make sure the worker is in the building. On the other hand other departments are eligible to log in from anywhere and do not have to use the designated computers that the rest of us do. They are not salary-based employees we are all hourly based. So basically what I am asking is, whether it is legal for some to be able to punch in to work from their personal computers, tablets, mobiles, ect... from wherever they are, while others must punch in using the designated computers???
