Legal Question in Employment Law in California
Well, I work in a sandwich shop and the place is individually owned and operated. The owner of the place is there all day long, from open to close. I have worked for this guy for 4 years now and i really dont like what he has come down to doing to save money. I say save money becuase i think thats why he is trying to do. He turns off the walk-in cooler and freezer. He does this for hours and hours. When i get to work at 6pm i find that the power is out on both of the units. I think he thinks i dont know what he is doing but when i have to go into the cooler or freezer it gets very dark in there since there is no light. Since the power is out in both units, the freezer leaks water on to the floor and that water that remains freezez and becomes very slippery. I feel its unsafe for us the employees and for our customers who think they are eating fresh food. What can be done to make him follow the laws. Can i whistle blow? I dont want to tell him anything because he will probably tell me that i dont know what i am talking about. He has been certified to be a manager so shouldnt he be more concerned with what he serves?

Call the health department and tell them of your concerns. You should be able to do so anonymously. It is illegal for an employer to fire an employee for reporting health and safety violations.
