Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Working for no pay just experiance

What are the legalities in which a person is working with me to get the knowledge and training to be able to learn the trade of floor covering in order to be able to do this trade on his own.

A friend of mine is going to work with me a few days a week or when he has time off his regular job for no pay, just experiance and to learn to install carpet and tile setting so he can get a contractors liscense and work his own business. Is this legal for me to do this? And am I liable if he was to get hurt. Also is it possible to train other people in this field and charge a fee. In other words can I charge a fee to teach someone my trade by having them work with me on jobs I am being compensated for? Thank you, JAE

He is you employee. You are required to comply with all wage and hour laws, including minimum wage ($5.75 per hour in California), overtime (after 8 hours per day and 40 hours per week), workers' compensation insurance - (its a crime to employ anyone without workers' comp insurance), EDD reporting, I-9 compliance ... and more.
