Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Wrongful Termination by President for working for VP

Fired by Pres after he ordered me to split my work week between home office and satellite office (for VP)in different city They have several companies under one group so all the money goes to the same place. We are suppose to be a team. A schedule was made for me to follow so everyone knew where I could be found. The reason the president said I was being let go was because he was not happy with the time it took to get his items done.He did not allow me to take work from office to office. The VP was satisfied with my work. When at home office president would make comments about my schedule, how it needed to be changed but after owners meetings on fridays, the president would offer a form of apology and would say something like '' when it comes to your schedule do not listen to me'' V.P. would reassure me and tell me not to worry. He told me they argued because the president did not like that vp ran an operation at a different location and pres had no control. None of my duties at my home office have a deadline but need to be reported on a timely manner whereas the other location I have scheduled deadlines and have met them all. Can I be fired for not being at his location when he thought he needed me?

Re: Wrongful Termination by President for working for VP

Sadly, California law allows an employer to terminate the employment relationship "at-will". This means, no cause is necessary to fire you, unless you have a contract that requires cause. Very few people have these kind of contracts.

We lawyers have to focus on the motivation for the termination. If you were fired for an unlawful reason, that could be considered a wrongful termination. If it is an unfair termination, there is nothing that can be done.

In California you may be let go for good, bad or no reason, unless discrimination involved, ie race, etc., etc. Only possible chance is if employee rules/regs have different info that we can hang an argument on, if company has employee handbook.
