Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Wrongful Termination??

Six weeks ago I began working in sales for a start-up equipment leasing company. Today I was told that I was going to be fired, given an exit interview with my boss and three others present, and told by my boss, who is a personal friend of mine and the company owner, that he would call me at home tonight (presumably to tell me when my last day would be after he met with others at work). I have not heard from my boss and will go to work tomorrow. Until today, I had received only positive feedback about my work. Today my boss tells me I am not enough of an asshole and not overly aggressive enough to do this job, but that I have 99 of the other 100 qualities he looks for in an employee. The company recently hired a new sales person, the friend of a guy who's been working there. The company has also recently lost a $15,000 in a deal that was not mine. It seems that there is another agenda at work. I feel that I am being wrongfully terminated and that these firing practices are unjust. Why don't they simply lay me off rather than fire me? What are my legal rights? Thank you for your assistance in this matter.
