Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Year-long mohawk now a problem

I work as an RN in an ER. For almost a full year now I have worn a mohawk to work, in several different colors, without reprimand or complaint. I just received a call from an administrator informing me I can no longer wear my mohawk or have it colored blue. After a year of my hairstyle being acceptable and no prior policies prohibiting it, can they now force me to change my hairstyle?

Employers do have the right to set grooming policies in the workplace. The fact that they haven't enforced an existing policy before or decided to implement a new one makes no difference. It could be that someone complained and brought attention to you. Regardless, such a policy is legal.
