Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

For being 1 month late in rent, my landlord claims he has hired a lawyer and now wants me to pay his lawyer $600 for hiring him in addition to the late rent and late rent fee. I live in Culver City, CA. Is this legal and what can I do?

You will have to review your rental agreement to see if you're required to pay attorney's fees if you're late in paying rent. $600 is excessive if the attorney hasn't done anything -- and you haven't even received a three-day notice to pay or quit.
