Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California
I am currently on a 6 month lease in my apartment. The carpet in my apartment has some wear and tear that I asked to be repaired back in November. Since then the regular maintenance worker has come to my apartment to try and fix it, he said it was too big and would have to send out a carpeting person. The carpet people have come to my apartment twice and both times told the apartment manager that it was not repairable due to the fact that they no longer carry this exact carpet. She asked twice if they could stretch the carpet, both times the said no. They attempted ordering a piece of carpet they thought would match but it turns out that it did not match. The carpet is in really terrible condition. Since moving in a lot of old stains have resurfaced on the carpet. The apartment manager said that they plan to repair it by cutting out a piece of carpet from one of the hallway closets and repairing the torn spot.
Can they do that? How can I get them to do good quality work? Preferably getting the carpet replaced since it is already in a really bad condition.

Unless the carpet creates some sort of saftey issue, the landlord can attempt to do the "cheap fix". The landlord is not required keep the unit aestheticly pleasing. The landlord's decision to try to squeeze more use out of an old carpet will probably affect you decision to sign another lease with them.
