Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California
me and 2 other roomates have been paying the 4th roomate our rent money and he was giving it to the landlords, we all have individual leases, the 4th roommate typed up a letter to the landlords saying the debt was on him for this months rent, plus about 500 from last month, he then overnight moved to alaska leaving all his stuff with a hand written letter telling us to divide up his stuff between us... what should we do and are we liable for the money to the landlord even though they have a signed letter (which i took a pic of on my phone) stating that the debt is not on the remaining roommates, just him?

Your former roommate's letter is totally irrelevant, unless the landlord agreed to it. The landlord has the right to collect all of the rent owed each month for the entire apartment or house. He does not have to deal with accepting less-than the total that was owed simply because your former roommate absconded with the rent. The remaining roommates are liable to the landlord for all remaining rent that has not been paid, or you will be evicted.
