Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

after 14 yrs need new info

I have been renting my apt for 14 yrs. now my landlord is asking for my ssn, bank acct numbers, credit history, mothers maiden name, my DOB. I have never had to give this type of info when renting, and i have been here so long. I don't feel comfortable giving that kind of info. Is this something I have to do? How can I be sure my credit and accounts will be safe and not used? It is a private owner. why would they need this info now after so many yrs?

Re: after 14 yrs need new info

I don't know why they would ask for that information. I guess my temptation is to tell him that you are not going to provide that information unless he can provide a lease or some other document you signed stating that you have to provide it. The problem is you probably are a month-to-month tenant at this point, and if you refuse to cooperate, he may just give you a sixty day notice to terminate your tenancy. He doesn't have to give or even have any reason for doing so, as your lease is terminable on sixty days notice at any point.
