Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California
my apartment is very cold and the heating system has been shot for nearly 3 months. it took nearly a month to get someone to look at it, and i just don't see any urgency on the part of the landlord to take care of it. he has sent 3 different people out, the first didn't know how to fix it, the second said he'd be back and never returned, and this third person took a part from it 2 weeks ago and left us with a tiny portable heater. what can i do ?

Call your local habitability authorities, such as building and safety. You can also give your landlord a written notice that you will hire a contractor, get the job done, pay out of your pocket and deduct from future rent. Make sure to keep a copy of the letter which you should send by certified mail.
