I'm quite late responding, as I was involved in other things for a few weeks which backlogged my mail. But, I would add..NO...ABSOLUTELY NOT! A landlord has no right to order you to stay in your apartment except for specified reasons....feel free to e-mail me with an update on your situation @[email protected]
Although I practice in Georgia, I have been a memer of the California Bar since 1979, so your question was forwarded to me.

Absolutely not.

the last time we checked "slavery" had been abolished. on a serious note though, maybe we are not following your "claim" here completely. however, from the facts given, your landlord's conduct would be blatantly illegal for many reasons. if you would like further assistance in this matter, email us directly with your contact information for a free phone evaluation.
