Apartment Lease Agreement

Can a landlord legally back date a new lease for a rental unit? For example, I am looking to lease an apartment and prepared to execute and start the lease today. The landlord wants the start date to be 12 days ago so he can collect extra money even though i have not received the keys or anything.

Can he "legally" do it? If he is not deceiving you or changing an agreement already it place, there is nothing illegal about charging you for a whole month even through you're only there for 18 days.
