Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California
asbestos exposure
The maintenance people that work for the propert management co (that is also owned and run by the owner of the building) installed a heater ( without a permit and were not lincenced contracters) Durring the process they removed the old heater exhaust pipe and cut it into peices so it would fit into the dumpster and it contained asbestos in it and it still has note been cleaned up yet.The Air Quality Management District is finally making them clean up the area some of the dust has been tracked into apartments from peoples shoes now if my apt . is contaminated to where i can not use the things in my apt and have to disposed of due to contamination will the owner have to pay to replace what ever is contaminated because it was his unlicenced workers that did the work without a permit that exposed the asbestos in the first place. the area was never sealed off to keep people from walking through where the pipe was cut up at and tracking the stuff into apts. on your shoes.

Re: asbestos exposure
I would require the landlord to pay for air testing in your unit as well as the cost of the cleanup and replacement of contaminated items in your unit. (However, it's always easier said than done.) You might talk to your renters' insurance carrier to see if it might require anything from you, including documentation. Perhaps it could assist you with the testing and/or replacement, if necessary.
