Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

My boyfriend moved in with me from his apartment with the understanding that he would pay rent. He did one time. Ive been really busy and no time but now I do and it has been over a year. what is the statue in california? can I sue for back rent? over $12k

Seriously, is he boyfriend material if he can't hold up his end of the bargain?! You can go back only one year. You might serve him with a three-day notice to pay or quit, and itemize each month in which he is delinquent. If he doesn't pay everythng within the three days, you can then file an unlawful detainer (eviction) lawsuit. It sounds like it could be very messy, though, and a trier of fact might be convinced that your picking up the rent was part of the relationship agreement if there's nothing in writing.
