Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

Can I Break a Lease by Work Transfer?

I live in California and I was wondering if by California law I can break a lease for a rental house IF I am transferred to another state by my current employer?

Thanks,

Martin

If you break the lease, your landlord must try to rent the house to others. You will be liable for any rent lost before it is re-rented, for the difference between the rent set in your lease and the possibly lower rent a new tenant will pay, and for the cost of re-renting including advertising, brokerage fees, etc. You CAN break the lease, but you do not escape responsibility for the rental loss the landlord cannot reasonably avoid.
