Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

Breaking Lease

I started renting a house on May 15th 2005 with 3 other people. Two months ago, (December) I was searching the megans law web site and found out that the landlord's son was listed as a known sex offender in violation and his address was at my house. I confronted the landlord regarding this, and asked for it to please be changed immediatly. As of today, it has not been changed. Can I get out of my 1 year lease which is up May 1st 2006 and still get back my security deposit? And if so, can you direct me to some resources?

Re: Breaking Lease

Generally, a landlord is not liable for actions outside his control, including governmental actions. As the landlord has no control over the reporting, he could not be liable/responsible, thus no breach of the lease unless your lease has a condition allowing for termination under this condition. Please read the lease, or see an attorney. You should be able to get a consultation for around $100
