I'm a California (Marin County)landlord and would like to ask my tenant to sign a lease 6 weeks in advance of its effective date. Is this legal?

Yes. The parties to a lease can agree when performance on the contract is to begin.

If it's in writing it can wait to begin for "lives in being plus 21 years" if you want.
