Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

In California, if I am on a month to month lease with a roommate, does my roommate need to provide me with a full 30 days notice if they plan on moving out of their room? Who is responsible for future rent if a new tenant is not found to replace them and they move out?

Your roommate is responsible for 30 days rent from the day they give notice. They can move out the same day they give notice or any time up to 30 days later, the 30 days of rent remains the same. If they move out with no notice, they owe 30 days rent. If they give notice mid-month then the additional rent owed is however many days into the next month is 30 days away. So if they pay rent on the 1st of October and give notice on the 7th of October, they owe additional rent for 7 days into November.
