Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

how much to charge rent

I own two houses in addition to my personal residence. Can I charge any amount I want to, to my children who want to rent them from me, or do I have to charge the rent amount as the current going rate for any houses being rented in the area. Thank you

Re: how much to charge rent

Even in most rent stabilization areas, when a rental unit is vacated, the going market rate allows the landlord to charge any rent the landlord wants to charge. Of course, it might not be rentable if it's overpriced. If it's a house, usually rent stabilization laws might not apply. Make sure, though, that you have the required permits (if any) to make it a rental unit.
