Three day notice to pay rent or quit

Do I need to inform the landlord, in writing indicating my intention to quit and deliver up possession of said premises? I owe $8,000 but has a $12,000 security deposit. Will the rest of the security deposit be returned to me? Do I need to pay the remaining lease period after quitting?

Why are you being evicted? Is there back rent due?

Where did the $8,000 come from?
