Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

dog rights

i rented my apt 9 years ago from the owner of the building. she later turned it over to a management co. on my lease i have a deposit for my dog, with a $100.00 deposit. now 9 years later they're telling me i have to get rid of my dogs. can they legally make me do this? and if i don't get rid of my dogs can they evict me? This is like asking someone to get rid of theyre kid! What do I do? Please give me some direction. I would move but the price to rent a house is totally outragious, and i'm on SSI and that doesn't give me very much to work with.

Re: dog rights

The owner is estopped from asserting that you can't have a pet after you put a pet deposit down and had a pet for nine years. See http://www.ddal.org/pdf/bffl.pdf for some good pet-related legal information. Consult a landlord-tenant lawyer in your area. The Los Angeles County Bar Assn. has a very good referral service. http://www.smartlaw.org
