Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

early lease termination

I signed a 7 month lease on my apartment which ends in late July. I have recently been laid off from my position and the only other job i can find is 375 miles from my present apartment. Do I have any legal options for breaking my lease? I can not afford to pay for both this apartment and a new one close to my new job.

Re: early lease termination

Without reviewing your lease, I cannot say whether you have the legal right to cancel the lease. If the Landlord has not committed a material breach of the lease, you probably can not walk away scot free.

On a practical level, you should talk to your Landlord, tell him/her about your predicament, and ask if you can try to find a new tenant to take over your apartment.
