Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California
I entered into a lease agreement with my sister. Things did not go well and rent got behind. The more I tried to catch the rent up the more it fell behind. So I got tired of it and decided to leave. Not to mention she allowed her boyfriend to move in without my consent and when I protested and offered a solution my solicitations fell on death ears. So that prompted me to move. I move after our lease agreement was up. We were on I guess a month to month lease; however no additional lease agreements were signed by me. When I moved I sent a letter to the landlord however I could not send a certified letter as the post office advised me they could not send that to a PO Box. This is the only physical contact address I had with the landlord. The other was a telephone number. The landlord was aware that I moved and has verbal noted it. Now a year later he calls me (at my job) and tells me he is about to evict my sister that she owes over 10,000 in back rent and that I am liable for it because I am still on the rental agreement.

Unfortunately, it sounds like the landlord is within his rights.
