fire in apartment

my brother lives in apartment in california. His Refrigerator caugth on fire and damaged apartment. Management asking for half of the damage cost as fire was because of my dad's refrigerator. Is this legal? My dad doesnt have any renter's insurance.please advice.

Can't answer without more information. What and/or who caused the fire? Law is simple. If tenant caused the blaze, tenant is responsible for cost of repairs. If it was faulty wiring, or short circuit, and landlord didn't have safe conditions, landlord is at fault. If investigation of fire can't shoulder blame on one or the other, 50% each sounds fair. Please feel free to e-mail me, or call, with additional details. It might also be worthwile for a lawyer to send a letter to landlord contending that he (landlord) owes the entire amount of repair.
