Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California
forfeited deposit?
i lived in an apartment with a couple other guys. they didnt take care of business before moving out (didnt give a 20-day notice, only 15 days) and our deposit was ''foreitted.'' i just got a bill for 1500 dollars showing the deposit was not used for ANY of the charges. when my deposit was forfeited, do they still have to use it toward damages or do they just consider it free money?

Re: forfeited deposit?
There is no such thing as a "forfeited deposit".
Deposits cover: (1) unpaid rent; (2) damages by tenants, or their guests; (3) cleaning, but only if premises is dirtier upon moving out, than when moving in.
There must be a refund within 21 days, and/or explanations of where the deposit was spent.
I suggest you retain a landlord tenant law to write landlord demanding the law be followed.
