Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California
gave deposit but current resident keeps changing move out date
We put down a deposit on a townhouse that the current resident had given notice on. She is buying a house and she keeps changing the date she will be moving out. We gave our notive at our apartment, as our lease will end at the end of the month. So now we don't have a place to move into for at least a week, unless she changes the date on us again. Is there any laws on giving notice at an apartment and then changing the date of move out even though someone else has already put down a deposit for that unit?

Communicate in writing with the landlord telling him/her that, unfortunately, you won't have a place to live on the planned move-in date and that if he must breach the contract, he will be liable not only for your moving costs, but your storage costs, any excess because of the delay, your hotel bills, etc. That might get some action. Of course, send it certified, return receipt and keep a copy.
