Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California
Harassing landlord, multiple issues, multiple questions
I live in a rent-controlled building in Los Angeles. The landlord refused
to perform any but the most urgent repairs for years. I called the City,
and the building went through 5 failed inspections to meet the code.
Now the landlord is harassing me and other tenants, she has put things
in writing complaining about my ''miniscule rent'' and how she wants me
to move. After six years of tenancy, I deducted $200 in unpaid interest
from my rent two months ago. The landlord refuses to cash that check
or the following one and says I need to move out or be evicted. She
refuses to perform repairs and has send profane and threatening emails
to me (I have them all saved). Other tenants are having similar problems
with her. We are harassed because we are rent controlled. Now the
landlord also wants to raise our rents to pay for the repairs. The threats
are too much, the harassment is awful and is making a hostile and
unsafe environment. At least 6 of 17 tenants want an attorney to handle
the landlord, who is also a laywer (but a bad one with multiple
supensions from the California bar). How do we find help? She owes us
for years of neglect and un-reimbursed repairs and harassment.

Re: Harassing landlord, multiple issues, multiple questions
What you have appears to be a case of retaliatory eviction (once she files a suit for eviction, if ever). Until that time, there are other options available to you and the other tenants. You may contact our office and we may be able to assist you further.
This is general information that I hope has been helpful to you. However, you should always obtain legal counsel familiar with your specific circumstances. We may be able to assist you with your legal issues. If we can assist you in the future, please contact us at www.unalaw.com and somebody will assist you as soon as possible.
