Home Rental Security Deposit Refund

If we cash a security deposit refund check, do we give up the right to challenge the amount within the time prescribed by law?

While technically the only problem would be if the landlord wrote above the endorsement line on the back that this was "paid in full". Then, you could not recover,

However, it is better to leave it uncashed, and use it as evidence at a trial.
