How do you know if a home/property is illegal to rent if not disclosed to tenant or in lease? Who would you contact to find out or inspect the property your renting to get some kind of verification regarding my concerns ?

Contact the City or County Building Department - they look into these problems fairly frequently now that new building permits are at a virtual stand-still. Be prepared, however, that if you are the tenant, you will be forced to vacate the property with almost no notice if it is found to be an illegal unit. Your only remedy then is to sue the landlord and then attempt to collect a judgment. The only other alternative is to hire a professional, third-party inspector.
