Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

Hello, the house that we are renting just recently foreclosed and someone bought the house at an auction. We rent. We were told we have 90 days to vacate the property however the new owner is claiming that we need to pay them rent now for those 90 days. Do we need to pay them rent?

thank you

Yes you absolutely do. The foreclosure is no different than if your landlord sold it to another landlord, except you have a minimum of 90 days to find a new place to live, rather than 30-60 days under a month-to-month rental agreement. If you have a lease with the former owner that will not run out for more than 90 days, then you have the right to stay to the end of the lease. In either case, however, you must pay rent to the new owner, and comply with all terms of your lease or rental agreement, just as if your former landlord had sold the property directly.
