Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

housing - rent

my roommates and i signed a lease with the our manager for $2400. i had told my manager at the time that we were looking for one more person to add to that lease. we have found someone and want to include her in our lease. she says that the rent will have to increase to $2475 if we are to add her, since that is what the owner of the apartment complex wants. is this legal for them to do? we are located in the los angeles area, if this makes a difference.

Re: housing - rent

You have a real "Catch 22" situation. A lot depends on provisions in your lease. Read your lease carefully.

Management can say no more people without more money, if such is in the lease. But adding a new tenant, such as you wish, would be alright, if the lease doesn't limit number of tenants.

The rent control in L.A. wouldn't really matter if you are rewriting a lease with consent of the parties.

Read your lease carefully. E-mail, or call, if you need more.
