Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California
My husband and I are living at an 11 room villas that we paid 8 weeks up frount for, plus $200.00 refundable cleaning and a non-refundable $50.00 for our cat. After the 8 weeks, the owners gave us work to do on the proparty to work for rent credit. Nothing much in writing except our hours. We had gained, by December, 2 weeks untill one of the owners decided I took too long on 19 hours of my work. She told my husband he could work it off for the extra stay, never giving me a personal reason other than the manager saying it was due to the length of time it took me to do a couple jobs and that I shouldn't have been helping my husband do his (I was NEVER told I couldn't help him). We are expected to leave the 15th. We are also expected to receive our deposit back. I think my hours should stand and I should be able to keep my 19 hours of rent credit. There is more, but it would be a novile if I posted it!

We have no way of our knowing whether you should get full credit for the hours you worked [were they objecting that your husband should have gotten his work done in X hours but he ended up charging for X hours and you charged for additional hours for helping him?]? Merely because you worked a certain number of hours does not mean they have to pay you for that amount of work. The cleaning deposit is totally unrelated to the amount of work you did.
