Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

Illegal Eviction

My rent payment was rejected by the owner of the property.

Locks were changed on me before my court date for unlawful detainer. I filed a police report before he changed locks and the owner still changed locks after report was taken, and he was advised by the police that he would have to wait till our court date before he did anything. I was a perfect tenant for 6 years at this location, and when a former business partner of mine attacked me at this location the owner of the location took the attackers side, cause they are friends. I was evicted illegally and need to know what to do. The city attorneys office said this is a civil case, not criminal.

Re: Illegal Eviction

You are correct. Changing the locks is illegal in California.

Also, this is civil, and not criminal.

To start with, I'd suggest you retain an attorney to write a strong letter to the landlord. Please feel free to e-mail me, if you need more help.

Good luck!
