Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California
I own an investment condo in San Francisco that was built in 1998. My current tenants who are a young couple renewed their month-to-month lease agreement for a second year.
Due to serious financial issues and healthcare bills for my mother, I have to sell the condominium unit. I understand that I must provide my tenants 60 days written notice to terminate their month-to-month agreement since my tenants have been residing in the unit for longer than a year.
Even after serving them with a 60 day notice, my tenants are asking for a re-location fee of $5,500 each to vacate the premises prior to the sale of the unit.
Are my tenants legally entitled to such a fee? Paying them such a fee causes financial hardship to me.

I am pretty sure they are not entitled to relocation payments in the situation you describe, but considering the mess you will find yourself in if you ARE obligated to make the payments and do not, I strongly recommend you pay someone a few hundred dollars to actually research this issue and come up with a proper legal opinion.
