Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California
June 2010 my by friend & I signed a 1 yr lease on an income based apartment. The rent is based on my boy friends income. We are no longer together & he has moved out & I have been paying the rent since August all by myself. Rent is 780.00 a month and is still based on his income. I am not working & have no source of income. As of December 1st my x supposedly paid $1000.00 to remove himself from the lease. The apt manager will not answer my calls nor return my messages, she never notified me that he is no longer on the lease or anything. Also 3 months ago the apt manager called me & said she made a mistake on the lease & my rent is suppose to be 780 instead of 740. So she had me pay back pay the difference of the past months. I heard that was illegal. She hasn't fixed any maintenance issues ( dish washer over flows, electric short in restroom, balcony blinds jammed, & stairway light is out; pitch black at night) so since she isn't doing her part of the deal on the lease, why should I? And since my x is off the lease spear she have to change the lease, notify me, change the amount of rent, cuz in order to qualify for that apartment were required to make 3G the amount of rent a month and I don't even make the amount of rent a month.... Plz help me asap...

I really apologize, however, this is not a situation that I can provide you with an opinion, or even an idea of what you may or may not be able to do without reviewing the lease and more facts. To even attempt to provide you with an opinion would be irresponsible, as these leases are all unique. You need to review the lease, and other information with a local tenant attorney as soon as possible.
